Understanding the Column of the Great Army at Wimille
• A symbolic place.
From as early as 1798, the camp at Boulogne-sur-Mer was envisaged by
Bonaparte, First Consul, as the departure point from which to invade
England.
• Commemorative columns in the 19th century. In
1800 Bonaparte promulgated a decree stipulating that the principal town
of each department should build a column to honour those who died for
France. The Column of the Great Army was decided upon by Marshal Soult,
and was inspired by Trajan’s column in Rome, as was the Vendome column
in Paris.
